Dirt Cheap Hair -Homemade the green way

Want to be green and look good doing it? Want sexy hair that smells good enough to eat? Well, I have some ideas for you that will help the environment and save you lots of the green stuff too!

Naked Shampoo

Gather up these items first
-3 tablespoons unscented liquid castile soap
-1 1/2 cups water
-2 tablespoons dried herbs (1/4 cup fresh)
-1 teaspoon almond or apricot kernel oil
-3 drops essential oil


Place herbs in a small glass bowl or canning.
Boil water and pour over the herbs.
Cover and let stand for 15 to 20 minutes.
Strain the tea into a bowl (Cheese cloth is excellent for straining)
Pour castile soap and almond or apricot kernel oil into herbal water and mix thoroughly.
Scent with essential oil and mix again.
Pour into a recycled shampoo bottle.
Shake before use.

Ooh LaLa... this is a very gentle shampoo.

Earth Girl Root Shampoo

Gather up these items first:
-1 fresh yucca root (about two inches long)
-2 cups hot water
-Hammer
-Bowl

Peel the yucca's brown covering until you reach the white center.
Using a hammer pound root into a pulp
Place yucca pulp into bowl.
Pour hot water over it and let it sit for two hours.
Strain out pulp. Pour over hair and shampoo as usual. It should lather like shampoo!
Rinse well with luke-warm water.
Discard any leftover.

This shampoo was used by Native Americans brides on their wedding day. It is gentle and has been said to prevent baldness.

Banana Nana Blend Conditioner
Caution: Smells so good you might want to drink this concoction, but don't!

Gather up these items first:
-1/2 banana
-1/4 cantaloupe
-1 Tbsp olive oil
-1 Tbsp plain yogurt

Blend all ingredients until well combined.
Apply mixture to freshly washed hair, saturating from roots to tips.
Leave set for 30 minutes.
Rinse with cool water.

Use this mixture once a week all year round to keep your hair soft and manageable.

Fruit Smoothie Hair Mask

Gather up these items first:
- 1/2 Banana
- 1/4 Avocado
- 1/4 Cantaloupe
- 1 Tbsp Wheat germ oil
- 1 Tbsp plain yogurt

Blend all ingredients until well combined.
Apply mixture to freshly washed hair, saturating from roots to tips.
Leave set for 30 minutes.
Rinse with cool water.
For extra conditioning, squeeze in the contents of a vitamin E capsule into the mix

Ramble on Rosemary Hot Oil Treatment

Gather up these items first:
-1/2 cup of dried rosemary leaves
-1/2 cup soybean oil

Combine ingredients in small pan and heat until warm;
Strain through a fine strainer or cheesecloth;
Coat the entire head and hair with the oil mixture, working it through to the ends;
Wrap hair in plastic wrap and wrap in a warm towel;
Leave oil on hair for 15 minutes;
Wash hair until oil is completely removed.

Ginger Dandruff Treatment

Gather up these items first:
-Ginger root
-1 teaspoon sesame oil
-1 teaspoon lemon juice

Squeeze ginger root through press to obtain one tablespoon of juice;
Mix all ingredients;
Apply to scalp and let dry before shampooing;(see alternative above)
Repeat three times a week.

Oregano Hair Detangler

Gather up these items first:
-1/2 cup fresh oregano leaves
-1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
-1 cup water

In a saucepan, heat all ingredients together on low;
Let simmer for 30 minutes;
Remove from heat and strain mixture to remove particles;
Let solution cool;
When cool, pour solution into spray bottle;
After shampooing and conditioning hair as usual, spray the solution directly into the hair, saturating the strands and the scalp
Comb through hair and leave on.

Lemon Shine Ade Rinse

Gather up these items first:
-Juice of 1 lemon
-1 cup of water

Mix the juice and water;
After normal hair washing, apply this rinse;
It will shine even the dullest hair.

Natural Hairspray
Gather up these items first:
-1/2 orange
-1/2 lemon
-2 cups water

Chop fruit into small pieces and place in a pot with 2 cups water;
Boil until reduced by half;
Cool, strain, and place in a spray bottle;
Store in the refrigerator
Add more water to reduce stickiness, if desired.
